Founded in 1994 and one of the original 10 clubs, the LA Galaxy is one of the most successful organizations in Major League Soccer (MLS) history, with 5 victories in 9 total MLS Cup appearances. The team has featured superstars such as David Beckham, Landon Donovan, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic over the years, and in 2021 the club added some “star power” on the technological side by developing an innovative Gigabit-speed portable network solution to assist the coaching staff at away game stadium.
Namely, the club’s Assistant Coach & Director of Video Analysis, Sam Green, developed, with assistance from Siklu, a setup connecting a base station and terminal units, both operating on an mmWave frequency, to the iPads of the coaching staff on the sideline. Mr. Green began working on this project in May 2021 and perfected it within two months.
The Challenge
Unsure of the network accommodations when they are on the road, the club wanted to replicate the full-featured and competent Ethernet-based network they use at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson. The club uses a 4K HD “tactical” camera that captures the game’s action. That live video is streamed to the bench to the coaching staff, who use it for video analysis in order to make formation or other adjustments during the match. The real-time capability helps the LA Galaxy counter their opponents’ moves or even stay one step ahead.
And, as is always the case in stadium environments with lots of other network equipment (telecoms and broadcast) and thousands of spectators, each of whom probably is carrying a smartphone, there is a great deal of potential interference that could interfere with the quality of – or even the complete transmission of – the video streams used by the club for this purpose. Therefore, for this highly specialized purpose, the LA Galaxy turned to Siklu to construct a portable, private network immune to common sources of interference.
