Off-Road Connectivity
As we have discussed before in our case studies and blogs, Siklu radios and related equipment are hardened and ruggedized to withstand the most extreme physical and weather conditions. A recent and frankly, exciting, deployment of Siklu EtherHaul™ 2500FX radios in Saudi Arabia provided an excellent demonstration of these capabilities, particularly in terms of protection against sand and dust. The ‘Extreme E’ international off-road racing series was created to raise awareness of various aspects of climate change and holds competitions in remote parts of the world, such as in the Amazon rainforest or Arctic regions, to highlight the effect of climate change in vulnerable areas of the world.
In keeping with its focus on environmentalism, Extreme E racers drive specialized, electric-powered SUVs and it promotes gender equality in motorsport by mandating that all teams consist of a female and a male driver who share equal driving duties. The Extreme E initiative got underway in 2019 and, after various organizational activities such as fundraising and logistical work, the racing program began in 2021 – and the first race was held the weekend of April 3 – 4 in Al ‘Ula, a city in the Medina region of northwestern Saudi Arabia, approximately 200 km east of the Red Sea.
